The dreaded summer slide remains a stumbling block in the modern educational system. Each year, as the year ends, we educators watch our students leave filled with new knowledge and experiences. We think about our hard work during the past months with joy and satisfaction. By the time those same students return in the fall, however, they will have forgotten much of what they learned the year before. For students from low-income neighborhoods, this could be as much as two-months’ worth of learning!

On June 8, CNN is asking students around the world to celebrate World Oceans Day with a Zero Plastic Lunch -- a lunch with no single-use plastics. Schools and students then share photos of their lunches, and videos explaining what changes they made to their lunch, with CNN on social media and email.

In January, I posted a blog on my own site about confidence-building strategies. The take-home points are that we (1) value mistakes and model healthy responses to failure, (2) encourage learners to focus on what they can do, and (3) maximize critical thinking opportunities.

On May 8, National Council for Teacher Quality (NCTQ), a nonpartisan research and policy group that is committed to modernizing the teaching profession, released an analysis of states’ strategic teacher compensation policies. This comes amid national concerns over teacher salaries.
