2014 NEA Convention: Member Declines & Partisan Politics

When 9,000 National Education Association members from across the country gathered in Denver for their annual conference last week, they made it easy to understand why union membership is in sharp decline.

Touted as an organization whose sole objective is to improve the quality of education, NEA delegates passed a variety of New Business Items that in no way served their members for this purpose– including one stating their intent to educate members about the effects of shale gas fracking, for a cost of nearly $10,000–and one disclosing their intent to protecting and supporting breastfeeding mothers.

Despite growing concern for the use of member dues in politically charged activities, the NEA also voted in a new president (Eskelsen García) who makes no secret of her time served as a member of former President Bill Clinton's White House Strategy Session, whose open about her lack of respect for conservative investors, and who stated that she 'prays daily' that certain elected officials who don't agree with certain political stances 'go to hell'.

Union officials were also quick to chastise leaders who aren't in lockstep with their agenda. Upset with Secretary Duncan's support for many reform-minded policies backed by diverse coalitions of supporters, the NEA also took time during the conference to endorse a resolution that called for his resignation.

In contrast, AAE's membership base has boomed because we believe that educators should have an alternative to teacher labor unions when their voices are not being accurately represented, or their money well spent. Teachers deserve a professional choice.

We hope you'll take this opportunity to let your colleagues know about AAE as an alternative to the high dues and partisan politics of NEA affiliates. It's critical that your fellow teachers are making informed choices.

Do you think NEA spends member dues wisely? Should they be partaking in initiatives outside of education?
