Coping with Tragedy: Resources for Teachers & Students

Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and families of the Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy. As educators, we are uniquely positioned to make an impact on our students' lives. As we begin to have conversations about the issues involved with preventing such tragedies, let us take a moment to appropriately address violence and trauma with our students.

The U.S. Department of Education has issued several helpful resources from the National Center for School Crisis and Bereavement. These guides aim to address helping students recover from traumatic events.

In light of Friday's terrible tragedy, AAE Executive Director Gary Beckner also expressed his condolences. "Our deepest thoughts and prayers go out to the victims, their families, and the entire Newtown community during this tragic time," said Beckner. "While many questions are still unanswered, we must commend the heroic teachers involved for their sound judgment and quick-thinking. Many lives were saved as a result of their courage."

In moving forward after such a horrible incident, it is critical for educators to realize the unique role they play in the prevention of violent crimes.
